Competition for free ladybird books

I recently wrote about research from the National Literacy Trust and their video interview for Abigail Moss - I posed one of the questions asked! Click to read my earlier post and see the video.

It was a shock to see that 1 in 3 children don't own a book - if I'm honest, I find it hard to understand that statistic!

McCain Smiles and National Literacy Trust free Ladybird Books CampaignResearch also showed that parents don't get to spend as much time as they like reading to their children - I can understand this, I'm lucky to be in a position where I can currently be a stay at home mum while my children are small - if I'd returned to my previous career, I couldn't imagine having the same amount of reading time, it would be impossible. With my husband being the one out working the long hours, he doesn't always get to read to the children every day as sometimes he isn't home before their bedtimes and I know he misses story time. But when he is, he not only reads but also makes up amazing stories - he really is the best at making up stories!

One of my lovely readers will be lucky and win a set of six treasured tales ladybird books from the National Literacy Trust and McCain Smiles. (If you don't win, you can collect free books via the McCain Smiles campaign)

  1. My favourite book to read with the boys is The Gruffalo, simply because of the reaction it gets. It's the book Max always asks for over and over. My top reading tip is to let them get involved, pointing to the words and repeating the plot in their own way.

My top tip for getting kids reading is to have books around from a really early age, even if they are mainly chewing on them!! 36. My girls all love anything by Julia Donaldson, I think because of the rhyming words. I think children like a book to be read with enthusiasm, different voices for different characters and surprise/shock/happiness etc from the narrator :) It makes all the difference (I think that's why my girls like me to read to them instead of their dad!) @pipersky1

  40. My daughter is 3 now and struggles with speech and language but ALL the Julia Donaldson ones are fantastic. Great repetition and colourful, engaging stories. She now chooses her own every night but 'Stick Man' and 'Room on the broom' is nearly always top of her list! I can't wait to introduce her to the books i grew up with like Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton

    ReplyDelete
  41. My tip to help children read is to always read the book to them first. My little boy soon picks up the words once I have read it to him.

    ReplyDelete
  42. My favourite book to read to my daughter is Lullabyhullabaloo. She loves telling the knights and giant to "shh" so the princess can get some sleep and we sing a different nursery rhyme to the princess each time we read it.

My little girl is only 2 so she can't read yet but she loves to look at the pictures in her books and tell me the stories from memory. I hope that enjoying books and feeling confident about telling stories will make it easier for her to learn to read.

  43. My favourite book to read with my daughter is The Very Hungry Caterpillar - we've read it since she was born and it's fantastic seeing her picking up names, colours and numbers from it.
