There's a lovely event being held worldwide in August, it's a Depressed Cake Shop to help raise awareness for mental health issues, the awareness scheme is from Emma at Cakehead and we are lucky to be having a pop up Depressed Cake Shop in Bromley!

The event is being organised by the lovely Elisabeth Shrimpton and will be hosted on the 2nd August at Cinnamon Culture. (46 Plaistow Lane, Bromley, BR1  3PA)

All bakers need to deliver their cakes at Cinnamon Culture on Friday 2nd August between 9am and 10am

Eat You can pop along to cinnamon culture between 10am and 5pm on Friday (02.08.13) and buy yourself a lovely grey cake and have a chat, mingle and learn something new about mental health.

Q Pootle 5 from book to screen Giveaway

There's a new show on cbeebies!

Nick Butterworth's book, QPootle 5 has been re-imagined into a fun show to be hosted on Cbeebies and will air daily from:
Monday 29th July at 8.15am

You can get more updates on Q Pootle 5 via its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/QPootle5

Space is a fun place to be with Q Pootle 5!
Out there…amongst the millions and billions of stars is a little planet called Okidoki. You might be able to see it if you look very closely…along the Milky Way, just past the Gold Top Nebula. This magical planet provides the perfect playground for a friendly little alien called Q Pootle 5.
Join Q Pootle 5 and his friends OopsyEddiStellaRayGroobieBud-D and Planet Dave, as they tackle the everyday problems of the final frontier.
There’s never a dull moment on Okidoki. Stranded on Crumbly Moon? Help is at hand. A planet with a temperature? No problem. A party hat for a two-headed friend? They’ll find one that fits . . . or maybe two!
Friendship is at the heart of the series. With fun and engaging stories, and rich and nuanced characters, space is a fun place to be with Q Pootle 5.
Q Pootle 5 features the voices of Ed Gaughan (Bunnytown, Black Mirror); Joanna Page (Gavin & Stacey, Poppy Cat); Steven Kynman (Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam); Richard Ridings (Peppa Pig); and Ella Kenion (Cuckoo, The Hive, Swashbuckle).

Main Characters
Q Pootle 5 is the central character. He’s fun, easy-going, kind, and resourceful. He’s a leader without being bossy. There’s nothing he loves more than spending time with his friends – they look up to him, but he doesn’t really notice.
Oopsy is Q Pootle 5’s best friend. She’s excitable, impetuous and OK, a bit gung-ho! Oopsy has the most infectious giggle in the galaxy. She loves to dance and draw..
Eddi is one person with two heads. A worrier who’s often in two minds! He doesn’t mean to be rude but he can sometimes be, how shall we say, direct! Eddi is a bit of a techie and can often be found tinkering with his spaceship.
Stella is creative, offbeat and independent. She loves growing things in her garden and she’s very generous. She plays the bagpipes (there’s room for improvement) and she lives with her bird, Ray.
Ray is a major bird who doesn’t like heights. He’s grumpy, offhand and lazy. But Stella loves him to bits!
Groobie is very jolly, very obliging and rather disorganised. He runs a cafĂ©-cum-store and if he hasn’t got what you need, he’ll almost certainly be able to get it. He plays the piano in a style somewhere between Les Dawson and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Bud-D is Groobie’s right-hand-robot. He’s loyal, enthusiastic and cheerful, but not always that reliable.
Planet Dave is a giant of a friend. He has the patience and wisdom of someone who’s seen it all in his four billion years. He spends a fair bit of time dozing, but he loves the company of his friends from Okidoki. For a planet, he gets involved more than you might think.

Q and A: The Making of Q Pootle 5 with Nick Butterworth (Executive Producer, Production Designer and Writer)
Nick Butterworth is a multi-million selling, award-winning author and illustrator. His books include Q Pootle 5,thePercy The Park Keeperseries,Tiger,Albert Le BlancandThe Whisperer. Nick has sold over 15 million books worldwide and his books have been published in more than 30 languages.
How would you describe Q Pootle 5 as a show?
Q Pootle 5 is a fun and exciting show with friendship at its heart. It taps into the world of young children where imagination always trumps reality!
And how would you describe him as a character?
Q Pootle 5 is a friendly and fun-loving person who has a real sense of adventure. He’s very kind and loves spending time with his friends. He’s good at solving problems – but he’s not infallible – sometimes it can be a problem of his own making!
How did Q Pootle 5 make the jump from book to screen? Tell us about the creative process
The idea came from my two books, Q Pootle 5 and Q Pootle 5 In Space. My son, Ben and I initially looked at the two books and the characters that we felt could be developed. Ideas would arrive very quickly. For example, one of us might suddenly ask, “Where does a character live?” and from this, we might develop a number of ideas, not always related to the original question! It was very satisfying when one idea sparked another.

Of course we wanted to maintain the integrity of the original books, but the possibilities that animation offered, the creation of a world with movement, voices, music and sound effects, inspired us to take things further.
Snapper is a family company – what is it like working with your family on the series?
Speaking for myself and for my wife Annette, who is also deeply involved in the production process, I can say that it has been a real pleasure. We each have individual strengths and areas of responsibility. But we also have a certain amount of overlap.
What do you love about Q Pootle 5?
For me it has been hugely satisfying to be able to widen the scope of what I have been trying to do in the field of children’s books. TV is a much more collaborative process than publishing. Working with Ben and Annette has allowed me to work with people I like and respect towards the common goal of creating a high quality, narrative based children’s TV series.
What makes the show appealing to the pre-school audience (and parents)?
Space is exciting and intriguing to people. The series has diverse, strong stories and rich nuanced characters that people can identify with. There is a lot of fun and laughter in the series and some very tender moments too, which all seem to really resonate with children and parents.
Why did you choose to create the show in CGI?
CGI gives us the opportunity to create very real environments and we knew with the right animators – and Blue Zoo are very much the right animators – we could realise much more
of our vision for the series. Being able to move and fly through the world and space in thre
dimensions gave us so much scope for storytelling.

Q and A: Ed Gaughan is the voice of Q Pootle 5
Tell us about Q Pootle 5 - how would you describe the show?
Q Pootle 5 is an animated series set in space, on a planet called Okidoki. It follows the adventures of a group of loveable alien friends. The show feels to me like the children’s TV I grew up loving, such as Mr Benn and The Wombles, as it is very character driven.
Tell us about your favourite character in the show
All the characters are ace but we all have a soft spot for Planet Dave!
What’s your favourite thing about him?
I love his lugubrious voice.
What do you think it is about the show that children are going to enjoy?
The characters and their interaction, the music, the spaceships!
What was it like working with Nick Butterworth and the team?
Nick and the team are great. They have a clear idea of what they want but allow us the freedom to make the characters come alive.
What was your favourite TV series as a kid?
Mr Benn, The Wombles, Bagpuss, Chortlon and the Wheelies, Top Cat, Stingray and Thunderbirds

* Apologies for the delay this week, long story short it was a technical gremlin! - My iphone crashed - was too full of photos (It had been telling me for yonks but i'd been "clever" and noticed if I used instagram, it still saved my photos) turns out it was over by 900MB's and wouldn't even let me delete anything. Plugged it into my computer and it kept making my computer crash and now thats playing up - grr! in the end I had to restore the iphone to factory settings :(

Good Luck everyone!

Monday, 22 July 2013

A Sunday afternoon with a paramedic team!

Saturday was an absolutely roasting day and I'd taken the little ones out for the day to a fair.
We were as sensible as can be, lots of drinks, hats, suncream and shade whenever we could but it was a scorcher of a day!
Blake (aged 4) had made a polite request for a happy meal for his evening meal - now he'd been very good, definitely treat worthy , desperate for a minion toy and to be honest, the heat certainly didn't make me want to cook!
We got a drive-thru and the little people nibbled a few chips on the way home but when we got back, Blake just laid on the floor and said he felt poorly.

Blake being the worlds most fussiest eater made us at first wonder if this was a random get out of eating clause, although with food being a happy meal I thought this odd! It didn't take long to confirm he was truly not well and by 7pm he was all tucked up in bed asleep with a temperature.

He stirred several times in the night and I gave him calpol to lower his temperature.

Sunday morning he was still 39.5 (103.1) so we gave him some more calpol, he was also extremely sleepy and we couldn't even get him to stir for a drink, he'd just go straight back to sleep and by 1pm there was no change and he'd only had one wee in 18 hours so I called NHS direct on 111

The thing that really bugged me was that Blake has never had a temperature before without some other symptom or obvious cause such as a cold, cough, tummy bug or following vaccinations etc. Naturally my thoughts turned to some sort of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

The nurse on the NHS direct line decided to send a paramedic crew to check Blake wasn't becoming dehydrated.

While I was still on the phone to her, my cheeky little monkey sat up in bed and asked me for smarties!!!! Yes! smarties!

The nurse still wanted to send someone to check so we got to hang out with a lovely ambulance team who checked Blake over and gave some advice to help lower his temperature - because calpol alone wasn't working we were advised to alternate ibuprofen with paracetamol based medicine.

They also recommended stripping him down to pants (he had short pj's on) and one of the team asked if I had any ice lollies - now, being a very hot day, Blake clearly out of the danger zone and my silly sense of humour I replied "yeah, I've got some Mini Magnums if you fancy one!" This joke did not seem to go down well or even recognised in its light hearted meaning - I was promptly told (in a stern head master voice) that fruit ice lollies are for Blake and a great way to control temperature and hydration!

The Paramedic crew (there were 3 of them) were brilliant and monitored Blake for about 45mins, they did a few observations that I wasn't even aware off such as noting his pupil size and used apps to time his heart rate with an iPhone! - aren't we all so gadget savvy these days!

Not long after they left, Maegan (aged 2) also started with a temperature so it soon became apparent that this was some sort of bug. (Although neither me or hubby caught it)

In both of them it lasted 2-3 days, didn't seem to have any other symptom beside the hard to control fever, except both complained of a sore mouth - I couldn't see anything, no red throat or husky voices or sores or anything!

Six women climbing The Shard London 2013

I wanted to share this email with you x

Hi Emma,

If you're reading this email it means I'm clinging to the side of the Shard - attempting something that's never been done before: scaling Europe's tallest skyscraper.

If we make it to the top, we plan to install a giant piece of art in direct view of Shell's three London headquarters down around me. We can see them, so I know they can see us.

WATCH LIVE and send your message of support to show the whole world that we don't want Arctic drilling.

I've been climbing for years, but this is the biggest challenge I've ever taken on.

Am I scared? Hell yeah. But I know that fear is only what you make of it. For me this is a personal act of bravery, and I hope that beyond all else it can encourage anyone hesitating over taking action - no matter what scale - to take that step today.

There are only six of us up here, but there are millions of us in every corner of the world who want the Arctic protected.

The most effective action we can do now is to make everyone else care for the Arctic as we do, and to do that we need to make it news. This is not a niche subject. This affects every single person on our shared planet.

Everyone should know that we've lost 80% of the Arctic sea ice in the last 30 years, and that should make people want to protect it. Not to drill for more oil that caused the melting in the first place.

Follow our progress on LIVE TV and please share this page with everyone you know on Facebook, Twitter and over email. Let's make this as big as we can.

Shell doesn't want us talking about their dangerous Arctic oil drilling plans. Together we can shout about them from the rooftops ;)

Wish us luck,

Victo (and Sandra, Sabine, Liesbeth, Wiola and Ali) x

Crocodiles in Chislehurst

Press Release:

CROCS AWAY!
Voluntary group arranges sponsored ‘pop along n see’ event that will see fallen tree trunk transform into Crocodile art

The Friends of Chislehurst Recreation Ground (“FOCRG”), a completely voluntary group with over 300 supporters is based around and focuses on this historic, wellused park plus woodlands. FOCRG have arranged a free ‘pop along’ event that will see a longstanding felled tree trunk transformed into a Crocodile by Chainsaw Carver artist William Lee of Chainsaw Carvings. The artistic process will take place over two days: Friday 12th and Saturday 13th July from 9am5pm. Visitors that popalong to view the transformation can view the carving in process from a set vantage point on either side of the path.

The carving cum Crocodile will take place on a main path that travels from Chislehurst Rec to Walden Rec. With apologies for any inconvenience, in order to keep both the public and wildlife safe, the path will be closed whilst the tree carving takes place. The path will open intermittently during breaks. Alternative access is available via Red Hill and Chislehurst High Street.

FOCRG Chairwoman Barbara Arora states:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to provide such an interesting inclusion to the Rec’s already improved facilities and we are grateful to the sponsor for this attractive addition to the landscape. Please forward any feedback to us via the focrg.org website.”

The Friends of Chislehurst Recreation Ground is a nonprofitmaking group. All of the Friends members give their time and expertise free of charge. FOCRG was formed in March 2010, to preserve and enhance the environment of Chislehurst & Walden Recreation Grounds for the benefit of the local community, in partnership with the London Borough of Bromley. The group grew out of a number of regular Rec users who felt that there were aspects of the park that could be improved. Instead of just moaning about it FOCRG thought they would actually try and do something! Visit www.focrg.org.uk for more information.
